The Treebark Dryad is an NPC that spawns rarely in the Forest during the Day. They sell various nature themed items found in Living Trees or Surface Chests.

A Sakura Treebark Dryad named "Blossomwood" will always spawn near the Nature Shrine. They will leave after 3 in-game days have passed after the world's creation.

Treebark Dryads (with the exception of the Shrine Dryad) will only despawn during the Night and if they are off-screen.

The player can kill a Treebark Dryad with any Axe, which will result in reducing Alignment by 1 if it is the first slain Treebark Dryad. Any Treebark Dryads encountered in the future will not sell any items to the player, and the Forest Nymph will require at least 3 Alignment to gain her trust, with the NPC version losing her trust when the player's Alignment goes below 2.

Treebark Dryads can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer and its upgrades.

Variants

Treebark Dryads come in three variants, depending on the type of trees nearby. The more Sakura or Willow trees are nearby, the higher the chance for a Treebark Dryad to spawn with the corresponding appearance.

Quotes

    • "Hmmmm... Are you friend, or foe? As long as you don't use your axe on me, I don't care..."

If spoken to the Treebark Dryad near the Shrine:

    • "What's that shrine behind me..? It was built by a group of humans, long dead by now, as a place of worship to some sort of figure... I don't recall their name, but I know they were a good friend of nature. Some may consider her the Mother of Nature..? Hmmm... My memory grows distant in my old age."
    • "I have been here a long time, even for us. I was a bold sapling, far more than the others, and so I had come to this land far far earlier than the rest. Maybe I was unwise, but I have seen more of us coming from our lands in recent times, so perhaps the others grew adventurous too."
    On the third day:
    • "I think I have lingered here for long enough. I was told by the humans to guard this place, but it has been far too long an age... Dangers have come and gone, but none have ever sought to demolish this shrine. To Fairwood I return - I have missed its lush forests and bark'en friends. Mayhaps you be this shrine's new protector..? If it needs one, anyway."

If Thorn, Bane of the Forest has not been defeated:

    • "Hmmmm... You wouldn't happen to see a brambly young man..? Poor thing was gulped up by the cursed forest we once lived in. I toil with no humans, but I do wonder if he's alright..."

If Thorn, Bane of the Forest has been defeated:

    • Hmmmm... The forest we came from, Fairwood, has been freed of its curse. I was there to witness the forest's warden be tangled up by those cursed roots... But we toil with no humans, and our magic did nothing, so we roamed and roamed until we found this strange portal. It's what lead us here."

If the player has Thorn Mask equipped:

    • "Hmmmm... You remind me of that young warden, did the forest's curse get you too..?"

If the player has negative Alignment:

    • "Hmmmm... You don't look like a very pleasant fellow. I hope you don't try to chop me down... Haha.. Ha."

If there less than 60 trees nearby:

    • "Hmmmm... You aren't using that axe of yours on my tree friends, are you..?"

If there are no trees nearby at all:

    • "Hmmmm... Where did all my tree friends go..? Perhaps they grew weary of me..."

If the Treebark Dryad is below 80% health or a Treebark Dryad has been killed before:

    • "Hmmmm... Do you fear the unknown? Does my size frighten you? Please, do not be afraid, I am just a lone ent."

If the Treebark Dryad is below 80% health or a Treebark Dryad has been killed before:

    • "Hmmmm... You are a peculiar thing. Do you chop for a reason, or for fun? You should be more considerate about your surroundings."

If a Treebark Dryad has been killed before:

    • "Hmmmm... I help no tree-feller."

After taking at least 10 damage:

    • "Now, now. Watch where you swing that axe of yours... I don't want you chopping down any of my friends."

    Below 50% health:

    • "It will do no good, young man/lady. We bring no harm to you. Chopping us down will only bring bad omens."
  • Notes

    • Treebark Dryads spawn on grass tiles during the Day and only if there are at least 60 tree tiles in an 80 tile radius. Their spawn chances are increased during the rain and are massively increased if the player has befriended a Forest Nymph. Additionally, only 1 Treebark Dryad can exist at a time.

    Trivia

    • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Treebark Dryad: "A slow-thinking ent from Fairwood. Some say it is wise, some say it is mystical, but everyone can agree that it is, indeed, a tree."
