The Forest Nymph is a rare enemy found near or inside Living Trees. She can spawn with varying appearances, as well as a random personality which slightly affects her stats and behavior.

Initially, Forest Nymphs alternate between being idle and wandering around. During the Night, they can sleep if they are standing on any Wood or Leaf blocks and there are Living Wood Walls behind them. If the player or an enemy enters their line of sight, the Nymph will become alert, indicated by an Emote Emotion Alert.gif emote. The Nymph will become more aggravated the longer the player/enemy stays close to her, eventually entering an attacking state. She will try to charge the threat head-on and attack in melee range with her scythe, while summoning a Livng Bloom Root.pngroot under the player/enemy when far away. However, if the enemy that the Nymph noticed has higher health than her, she will try to instead flee from it and attack with roots from a distance. Additionally, Forest Nymphs inflict Dryad's Bane debuff to enemies and deal 50% more damage to Dark Type enemies.

The Forest Nymph will heal 4 health per second if she's standing in a pool of Water or Honey or 3 health per second if she has the Wet debuff or during the Rain. Meeting both conditions will still result in 4 health per second being healed.

Having King's Oak Staff's minion active, at least +1 Alignment and approaching a Forest Nymph will trigger an interaction, after which the Nymph will become a friendly NPC and will not attack/flee from the player.

Forest Nymph can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer and its upgrades. She also requires 1 kill to be awarded completion of her Bestiary entry and 10 kills for her banner, as opposed to the usual 50 kills. Befriending a Forest Nymph will also automatically unlock her Bestiary entry.

Personalities

Normal is the most common one (37% chance) and has base stats. Normal Nymphs will start attacking after 5 seconds of being alerted.

Aggressive is the second most common personality (22% chance). These Forest Nymphs have more damage, health, movement speed and vision range, as well as dropping more coins. They will start attacking after 4 seconds.

Calm is a slightly rarer personality (18.5% chance) with reduced damage, health and movement speed. Calm Nymphs take 10 seconds to start feeling threatened by the player's or enemy's presence.

Shy is one of the two rarest personalities (11% chance). They have reduced damage and health, but increased defense and speed. Instead of charging the aggressor, after 2 seconds Shy Nymphs will always start running away from them, regardless of the health difference.

Jolly is one of the two rarest personalities (11% chance) and has more health and movement speed. Jolly Nymphs will sometimes hop in place, signifying their happiness. They do not consider the player a threat unless the player attacks first and will take 15 seconds to become hostile to an enemy.

Appearance

Forest Nymphs can spawn with different hairstyles, hair colors, eye colors, hair decorations and with/without a hat. There are 720 possible Forest Nymph variants, not accounting for personalities. If counting personalities as well, the total number of variants goes up to 3600.

The player can change the hairstyle and hair decoration of a friendly Forest Nymph after offering her an Herb Bag.

All appearance variants are purely cosmetic, with the exception of the Blind eyes variant. Blind Forest Nymphs have massively reduced vision range in exchange for the ability to sense movement even behind blocks. A Blind Nymph will enter her attacking state only if the player/enemy continues to move in her vicinity or if they attack her first. Standing still will make the player invisible to the Nymph, unless she's already in the attacking state.

After the player has successfully befriended a Forest Nymph with King's Oak Staff's pixie, the Nymph will become a friendly NPC, keeping her original damage and health values, as well as personality. She will not be able to be housed until the player progresses her quest. Forest Nymph's trust can be lost at any point if the player's Alignment goes below 0 or below 2 if a Treebark Dryad has been killed.

The Forest Nymph's healing while in the water is increased to 20 health per second and 15 health per second while afflicted with Wet debuff/during the Rain.

Initially, the player can only request Nature's Blessing which grants the Lucky buff with the duration scaling with the player's Alignment. Offering an Herb Bag will reward the player with a Forest Core and unlock the options to decorate and style the Nymph's hair, as well as increase the Nymph's health by 500. Giving an Anglonic Mystic Blossom will be rewarded with Forest Nymph's Sickle and unlock the option to follow the player around. Afterwards the player may offer to build a house for the Nymph. At least half of the house's tiles and walls must be Living Wood, Leaf, Living Mahogany or Mahogany Leaf. At least 20 tiles of water must be placed close to the house as well. If the player meets all the requirements and asks the Nymph about the house, the quest will be completed, awarding +1 Alignment and unlocking the Trade option.

Additionally, after finishing the house, the player may request a crux while the Spirit Walker is active. Doing so with an Empty Crux Card in the inventory will imbue it and transform into Crux Card: Forest Nymph.

Quotes

Interaction quotes

  • Befriending the Nymph:

    • "Your fae says you have a good heart. I will be less wary of you from now on." (Normal)
    • "Are you sure, fae? This human doesn't look very kindly, but I will trust your word." (Aggressive)
    • "Your fae says you're kind-hearted. I will put it in good faith." (Calm)
    • "Your fae tells me you're safe. I'm still rather sceptical, but I'll trust it's words." (Shy)
    • "Your fae just told me how pleasant you are. A friend of nature is a friend of me. (Jolly)

If the player loses the Nymph's trust:

    • Leave. The fae's trust in you was an act of folly, the World deems you a danger.

    Anytime:

    • "..." (Shy)
    • "Come to talk to me? I don't mind the company, as long as nature deems you well." (Jolly)

If the player has killed a Treebark Dryad:

    • "A forewarning to you, I will never forget your act of felling towards the tree-folk. I only speak to you now for the good you have done despite that."

If Thorn, Bane of the Forest has been defeated:

    • "The World tells me you slew that blighted warden of Faywood. Shame he had to fall, but at least that horrid blight is ceasing. I kept my distance from people back at my old home, though I do recall his name - Alder, it was."

If the Ancient Deity Duo has been defeated:

    • "I had sensed the return of a great presence, however it was short-lived. You defeated her I presume? A wise decision - Akka was a friend of Nature only in soul. Her mind, however, was only filled with demand and grim desires. Ukko, her husband, was the same."

If the Wasteland has been created:

    • "I do not approve of the horrific destruction you have caused to a portion of the land, what manner of power caused this? A blast that withers earth, mutates plant, and decays air. Such power is otherworldly."

If the player is wearing the Common Guard armor:

    • "Common Guard, are you? Members of their troop used to lurk around the forests I came from. They got too close for comfort so I left and found the portal here."

If the player is wearing the Living Wood armor:

    • "You better hope that wood you don is not from my home."
    • "You don the wood of a living tree. If I find out you've taken it from my home, I won't be happy."

If the player is wearing the Dryad set:

    • "I see you too have no use for neither fancy nor practical attire."

If the player is wearing the Garland:

    • "I see you have decorated your hair with various flowers, to mimic or to mock me? That remains unclear.
      • It suits you." (Normal)
      • Probably the latter." (Aggressive)
      • Although, I do find it quite cute." (Calm)
      • I'll take it as a compliment." (Shy)
      • It definitely suits you though!" (Jolly)

If the player is wearing Thorn Mask:

    • "You aren't blighted, are you? No, it is just a mask."

If the Spirit Walker ability is active:

    • "Oh, how vulgar. You are able to see within the other realm and as such are bearing witness to my ethereal form. Or mayhaps you aren't submerged deep enough to see it in full? No matter."

If the player hasn't offered an Anglonic Mystic Blossom:

    • "What do you want? I'd rather be left alone."
    • "Don't make yourself too comfy, I only trust you because of your fae's kind words about you." (Normal, Aggressive, Calm, Shy)
    • "Better watch yourself." (Aggressive)

    Offering an Herb Bag:

    • "Is this a gesture of friendship? Interesting. I will accept this lovely array of flowers, and in return I will give to you this." (Normal)
    • "Trying to win my trust with flowers? Whatever, I will accept. Take this in return, if you want." (Aggressive)
    • "Oh, how lovely. I'll accept this beautiful array of flowers, and return the gesture by giving you this." (Calm)
    • "For me? How interesting. Would this be a gesture of kindness? I will accept. You may have this in return." (Shy)
    • "What a cute little collection of flowers, I shall accept this gift with glee. Have this in return." (Jolly)

    Offering an Anglonic Mystic Blossom:

    • "This is... To offer such rarity to me is bewildering, to say the least. What may I bestow that may rival this? My possessions are limited, however my blessings are boundless. Take my weapon, for it is the only tangible gift I have." (Normal)
    • "You... Goodness. Why would you possibly give me such a rarity! I cannot help but sense malicious intent. And yet, the World says you are good, and the World does not lie. In return for this, take my weapon, for it is the only tangible gift I have." (Aggressive)
    • "Offering this to me is quite the shock. Whatever I may bestow in return would not rival such rarity. Take my weapon, for it is the only tangible gift I have." (Calm)
    • "For me? Are you sure? It is such a rarity I can not simply comprehend as a mere gift. It almost makes me nervous - to give away so freely, you must have a golden heart. But I do not know what to give in return! Forgive me, take my weapon, for it is the only tangible gift I have." (Shy)
    • "Goodness me! Such a rarity to bequeath to me, I am astounded by your generosity. Unfortunately I have not one thing in my possessions that may match your gift. Take my weapon, for it is the only tangible gift I have." (Jolly)

After Anglonic Mystic Blossom has been offered:

    • "The blossom you gave me is often gifted to others to bring good luck and the blessing of a long life. Being who I am - a forest nymph, as you'd call me - I can use these blossoms to grant me a greater soul and connection with the World; Epidotra, people call it."
    • "We nymphs are rather solitary beings, so consider the fact that I don't mind your presence a blessing." (Normal, Aggressive, Calm, Shy)

    Clicking on the "Follow" option:

    • "As you wish. I will not be pleased if you make me wonder too far from my territory though." (Normal)
    • "Fine. But if you lead me into a pack of ghouls I will not be happy in the slightest." (Aggressive)
    • "Sure. It better be worth it." (Calm)
    • "I'm not sure... Alright, fine, just don't take me too far from home." (Shy)
    • "Follow? I'll agree, but to where I wonder?" (Jolly)

    Clicking on the "House?" option:

    • "We usually live in giant hollowed-out trees with a body of water nearby. The tree is only good for hiding, but the water is vital for our survival, as we cannot blossom without it. The living trees this island has are the closest things to the great oaks back through the portal, but they could use some sprucing up. They aren't exactly homely."

Clicking on the "Offer building a home" option:

    • "Your fae spoke truthfully about you. If it wouldn't be too much work, I will accept a home you create for me. I have requirements, however. For one, I would prefer if it was made of living wood - I give you permission to renovate an existing living tree if so inclined, but as long as it's made of living wood I'll be satisfied. Secondly, I need a body of water nearby. A small one is fine, just as long as I can submerge my roots into it."

Clicking on the "How is your home?" option and there isn't enough Water:

    • "It is suitable. I can see myself getting comfortable in here for now, however I see no pools of water nearby.
      • If you can get a body of water to be close to my new home I will accept it." (Normal)
      • I did ask for a body of water, did I not? Make one and I'll accept this place as my home." (Aggressive)
      • Make a nice body of water close at hand, and I'll accept this new home." (Calm)
      • If you can, please create a body of water close to my new home." (Shy)
      • A small lake or pond is very important for us forest nymphs. I'll be most pleased if one was present." (Jolly)

Clicking on the "How is your home?" option and all conditions are met:

    • "It is a lovely abode. You have helped me more than most humans... (Normal)
    • "It's alright. Nothing too special, I guess. Actually, nevermind, I am being too harsh. Most humans have not been too kind to me... (Aggressive)
    • "This is a pleasant place. I am thankful for it, and all you have done. If only the other humans were so kind... (Calm)
    • "This place is warm and cozy, I was very nervous around most humans, but it would seem my fear was misplaced... (Shy)
    • "Oh, it is beautiful! A wonderful little abode for me. I cannot thank you enough, to think a human would be so giving... (Jolly)
      • You are human, are you not? The World does not recognise you as its child, but no matter. You have my gratitude."

Clicking on the "Request Crux" option:

    • "Fascinating. I never would've expected one such as yourself to have this ability. As you wish, I will give to thee the spirit of my kind." (If the player has an Empty Crux Card)
    • "You bare no object to imbue." (If the player doesn't have an Empty Crux Card)
    • "I cannot gift it to thee unless you're partly in the realm of spirits." (If the player is not in the Spirit Realm)

After the house quest has been completed:

    • "Do you wonder why there aren't more of us around? It is simply the matter of strict requirements for our seeds to grow, and the centuries it takes for them to fully blossom. We usually produce seeds in the Spring season once every decade - a long time for humans. If you see a peculiar bulb near my pond, I'd recommend saying farewell to me and this place indefinitely. A blooming nymph is a fragile thing, and I won't take any chances."
    • "I have learnt many things from my observations of humans, along with the languages they speak. I understand they have a false perception of us, some say we were created by the World to replicate the "perfect image of humans". Of course, that is merely a rumour fuelled with egotism. Humans are far from perfect, form or otherwise."
    • "Artistic depictions created by humans show us having a much more similar appearance to them than what is accurate. They seldom get the chance to get a close look at us so it is understandable. I came across such artwork in a book I stole, it was... the complete opposite of flattering."
    • "Humanity's intrigue of us have generated assumptions of how we act and our culture. I've even heard of a fictional figure known as Nyssa, the Forest Nymph Queen - which is based on the idea that we have some sort of hierarchy, which is false."
      • I found it so humorous that I renamed myself to Nyssa." (If the Forest Nymph's name is Nyssa)
    • "You're curious about our connection with the World, are you not? Hmm... It is a secret well-kept from others, and I will keep it that way for the time being." (If the player's Alignment is less than 4)
    • You're curious about our connection with the World, are you not? It is a rather well-kept secret, but the World trusts you enough for me to say. With meditation, we nymphs are able to call upon Epidotra and speak to it; this grants insight beyond human limits, which can be used to figure out a creature's true intentions or to be alerted of dangers - natural and unnatural - that besiege the earth. (If the player's Alignment 4 or higher)
  • Notes

    • Forest Nymphs spawn on Grass and Living Wood tiles and only when there are at least 5 Living Wood tiles around and no Forest Nymphs are currently alive in the world (including friendly NPC variant). Spawn chances are increased during the Rain and if the player has the King's Oak Staff's minion active.
    • Forest Nymphs will not consider Plant-like Type enemies a threat and will not retaliate against them if damaged.
    • Befriending a Forest Nymph will also unlock 1 new hairstyle available through the Stylist.
    • If the player has Spirit Walker active, Forest Nymphs will appear as pitch black shadows with white eyes.

    Trivia

    • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Forest Nymph: "Rare humanoid creatures found in forests, far from civilization. They live in giant hollowed-out trees, usually near an enchanted pond. They are solitary and territorial beings, seldom enjoying the company of others. It is unknown how these creatures came to be, legends suggest they are the handiwork of Epidotra itself - grown from the earth same as all flora, but to blossom into the form of a human."
