Calavia, Warrior of the Iron Realm is a Pre-Hardmode miniboss found at the Underground Portal after defeating Skeletron. She attacks automatically as soon as the player enters the Underground Portal area.

While Calavia, Warrior of the Iron Realm is alive, the music Dramatic4 will play.

Behavior

Calavia has two phases, with both playing our largely the same, with the same attacks and behavior between the two of them. Calavia's slashes can be parried using specific swords, granting the Striking Moment buff. Upon entering the Undergrounfd Portal area, Calavia will use her Icefall to summon an ice mist barrier around the structure that inflicts the Pure Chill debuff on contact. Leaving the barrier will end the fight, with Calavia using a Recall Potion if she gets too far away from the Portal. The player can intitiate the battle again by entering the Portal area.

Calavia's first phase possesses a shield that blocks all attacks from the front and has a large amount of Guard Points. After breaking the shield, Calavia gains the ability to dodge any projectiles coming her way with a cooldown of 0.5 seconds

Additionally, Calavia can use different potions during the battle. These potions are in limited supply and Calavia will not use a potion until its duration runs out:

Regeneration Potion - 1 max. 1 minute duration. Heals 1 health every 0.5 seconds.

Swiftness Potion - 2 max. 1 minute duration. Increases movement speed by 25%.

Ironskin Potion - 2 max. 1 minute duration. Increases defense by 8.

Upon reaching 300 health, Calavia will stop fighting, gain 50% damage reduction and will beg the player to stop as well. The Chalice of Alignment will comment "She is wishing to be spared". The player can either spare her or kill her. Killing Calavia will result in Alignment being reduced by 2 and the Chalice commenting "How ruthless...", while sparing will turn her into a friendly NPC.

Attacks

  • Performs a slash using the Blade of the Mountain that can deflect non-magic projectiles. Getting hit by the tip of the slash has a 50% chance to inflict Frozen.
  • Thrusts the Blade of the Mountain in front of her, performing a quick omnidirectional dash. If she hits a tile during the dash, the Blade will send out a Calavia Stab.gif Frigid Stab that can travel through blocks and inflicts Frostburn. If the player is hiding behind tiles, Calavia will always use this attack.
  • Uses Icefall to generate ice mist and crystals in front of and behind her, then launches the crystals towards the player with the Blade of the Mountain.
  • Jumps into the air, spinning the Blade of the Mountain around herself while moving slowly toward the player, inflicting Pure Chill and Frozen.
    • Blade of the Mountain spin reflects non-magic projectiles that hit it.

Quotes

  • When the player approaches Calavia (initiating the battle):

    • Gor'on!
    • Mubirok abo, lo tasium ye!
    • ...Ta baadurlo ye.

If the player leaves the area or is out of reach

    • Mur yeborti?
    • Gorhal'on...

    After reaching low HP:

    • Taborti! Taborti! I yield! I yield!
      • (If the player defeated her with a summon weapon): Taborti! Taborti! I yield! I yield! Call your servants off!
    • Grant me mercy!

    If the player spares her:

    • You understood? So you aren't a khru?
    • Apologies for the startled reaction, I never expected to meet a khen here.
    • I am actually in need of some assistance, I'll explain more by the portal.

If the player spares Calavia, she will become a stationary friendly NPC near the Underground Portal. The player can offer to help Calavia if the world contains Gathic Cryo-Crystals. Calavia will request a Pure-Iron Helmet and 6 Pure-Iron Alloys, but giving these items is purely optional, as the Forging option and her Crux Card will be available regardless of that. Calavia will jump into the portal and leave after the player picks "You're ready to leave" and "Farewell" options.

    Forging

Placing down a Gathic Cryo-Furnace near Calavia will unlock an option to forge new weapons.

    Requesting a Crux

In order to receive a crux card from Calavia, the player needs to talk with the Spirit Stranger first until he mentions that Calavia might be holding a captive spirit and aks the player to confront her. If the player talks to Calavia about a captive spirit, a short cutscene will play with Calavia and the Spirit Stranger talking to each other. After the cutscene ends, the player can request a crux card from Calavia if they have the Spirit Walker active, receiving Crux Card: Kyretha if possessing an Empty Crux Card.

    Quotes

  • Talking to Calavia after the fight:

    • "Again I must apologise for attacking ye, I asked for your purpose but clearly ye aren't Gathic. I should introduce myself, I am Calavia, a Chief-Warrior of the Iron Realm. It is such a pleasure to meet a khen here, I've seen naught but rotting khru ever since I got here." (The player can choose "Assistance?")

    If the player clicks "Assistance?":

    • "Yeah I came from the portal, 'twas atop a snowy precipice. When I tried going back through however, it took me into what I can only assume to be Gathuram's catacombs. Back and forth I went, yet it was always the same. Here, catacombs, here, catacombs... It is infuriating! How these portals work!?" (The player can choose "You want to go back?" or "Why did you enter?")

If the player clicks "Why did you enter?":

    • "Our squadron climbed up a mountain to retrieve the body of a famous warrior, and came upon the portal. We should've reported it to the Riftwatch and carried on our business, but my witless curiousity said otherwise and chose to take a looksie. "In and out, nice and quick" I thought. Needless to say, ye can see how smart that idea was." (The player can choose "You want to go back?")

If the player clicks "You want to go back?":

    • Precisely! I have a family anticipating my return, yet I see no way back to where I came from. Do ye know anything at all about portals?" (The player can choose "Just as clueless as you" or "Nothing at all")

If the player clicks "Just as clueless as you" or "Nothing at all":

    • "How helpful. Not like I can blame ye, they're magic of a bygone age. Only the Riftwatch have knowledge of 'em. Speaking of which, they must've been here before. Portals don't just appear with a stone ring and foundation pre-'rected - 'tis the Riftwatch's job to build those. To stabilize 'em, or so I've heard." (The player can choose "What will you do?")

If the player clicks "What will you do?":

If the world doesn't have Gathic Cryo-Crystals:
    • "Well I can't just mope around forever, the only way forward is scramming through the catacombs and praying to Sariel I find a way to the surface. It'll be a massive gamble tho', the catacombs are like a subterranean domain in their own right!" (Standard options, except "Requirements", appear")
If the world has Gathic Cryo-Crystals:
    • "Well I can't just mope around forever, the only way forward is scramming through the catacombs and praying to Sariel I find a way to the surface. It'll be a massive gamble tho', the catacombs are like a subterranean domain in their own right! I'll stick around for now, maybe if ye give me a Gathic Cryo-Furnacefurnace I could offer ye some smithing." (The player can choose "Anything I can help with?" or "Good luck with that")

If the palyer clicks "Good luck with that":

    • "I'll need it... Actually, would ye be a dear and get me some equipment to aid me? My shield and helm took quite a blow. Not like I can blame ye, I did initiate the clash." (The player can choose "What do you need?" or "I refuse")

If the player clicks "I refuse":

    • "... So ye think I can survive the catacombs as I stand? If ye won't assist me, I suppose I got no choice but to give it a shot. I still have some of this place's potions left over, they've come in real handy. Guess I'll stick around in case ye change your mind." (The player can choose "I will offer help" or "You're ready to leave")

If the player clicks "I will offer help":

    • "Thank ye, stranger. I'll need a new Pure-Iron HelmetPure-Iron Helmet, and some Pure-Iron AlloyPure-Iron Alloy for remaking my shield. That is all I ask of ye. If ye give me a Gathic Cryo-Furnacefurnace I can offer some help back. I work as a blacksmith on the side." (Standard options appear)

If the player clicks "Anything I can help with?":

    • "How polite of ye to ask. After our little squabble my helm and shield are quite... thrashed. I have nobody to blame but myself, but anyway, if ye could give me some replacements and supplies to aid me, I will be most grateful." (The player can choose "What do you need?")

If the player clicks "What do you need?":

    • "A new Pure-Iron HelmetPure-Iron Helmet, and some Pure-Iron AlloyPure-Iron Alloy for remaking my shield. That is all I ask of ye. If ye give me a Gathic Cryo-Furnacefurnace I can offer some help back. I work as a blacksmith on the side." (Standard options appear)

    Standard dialogue:

    • "You are the first khen I've met here - there's been floods of krhu around, so I prefer the change."

If the player is wearing Pure-Iron armor:

    • "Are you perhaps another warrior of the Iron Realm to stumble upon this place? Or did you rob that armour you wear?"

If the player is wearing Dragon-Lead armor:

    • "That armour you don is rather threatening. Where did it come from? Reminds me of the Thamor'in dragons that occassionally hinder the western countries."

If the player is wearing Common Guard armor:

    • "I am to assume you're an Anglic knight, based on your attire. Should've figured you wouldn't understand Gathic... Oh well."

Before obtaining the Spirit Walker ability:

    • "That corpse by the portal is oddly soulful, I hope it doesn't come alive."

After obtaining the Spirit Walker ability:

    • "You got a strange ability from that soulful corpse by the portal? My worries of it becoming a danger must've been unfounded, though I yet sense a will therein."

    Standard options:

    If the player clicks "Requirements":

    None fulfilled:
    • "A new Pure-Iron HelmetPure-Iron Helmet, and some Pure-Iron AlloyPure-Iron Alloy for remaking my shield. That is all I ask of ye."
If only helmet has been given:
    • "Ye have given me the helmet so far. I don't doubt it'll be enough, yet I'd feel much safer with a shield too." (This line is added to the base one)
If only 6 Pure-Iron Alloys have been given:
    • "Ye have given me the shield so far. I don't doubt it'll be enough, yet I'd feel much safer with my head covered too." (This line is added to the base one)

If the player clicks "Offer Pure-Iron Helmet" (must have a Pure-Iron Helmet in their inventory):

    • "Umgor'ye. The khru are ruthless creatures, a helmet to protect my neck an' head is much appreciated."
When given the Antique Pure-Iron Helmet:
    • "Oh, and it is an antique design too? The fur is a nice privilege." (This line is added to the base one)

If the player clicks "Offer 6 Pure-Iron Alloy" (must have 6 Pure-Iron Alloys in their inventory):

    • "Umgor'ye. I feel much safer with a shield."

If the player clicks "Feeling ready?" (this option replaces "Requirements" after giving a helmet and 6 alloys to Calavia):

    • "As ready as I can be. I still have a few potions from this place, I've never seen such concoctions before... They must've been created by a master alchemist."

If the player clicks "Gathic Cryo-Furnace?" (this option is replaced with "Forge" after placing down a Gathic Cryo-Furnace):

    • "Yes, place down a Gathic Cryo-FurnaceGathic Cryo-Furnace near me and I will offer to forge some equipment for ye."

    If the player clicks "Forge":

If the player has Zweihander in their inventory:
    • "Ye carry a Zweihander? That is a famous blade of the Iron Realm, and so too was it the original form of the Blade of the Mountain - a sword of a mighty warrior who unfortunately fell to a great beast, I am its new holder. Would ye like me to make a replica of it?"
If the player has Mistfall in their inventory:
    • "That spell tome ye hold is quite weak, would ye like it to become similar to my own?"

If the player clicks "About you?":

    • "Ta? I am a chief-warrior and blacksmith of the Iron Realm. Back in Khen Boldur I have a husband and two kids. I seldom have the time to see 'em, but staying far apart only makes the moments we're together all-the-more special, or am I just bein' too optimistic? It's regrettable, but my job leaves no room for indulgences. I lead a squadron of Arum that primarily scouts out unmarked lands. My men have probably given up on me by now. Typical."

If the player clicks "You're ready to leave":

Before giving Calavia a Pure-Iron Helmet and 6 Pure-Iron Alloys:
    • "... If ye insist. *sigh* This'll be a challenge, but I'll trust your judgement. I'll make it through to reunite with my squadron and finally return to my family, there is no better motivation than that. Farewell, stranger." (The player can choose "Farewell" or "Don't leave yet")
After giving Calavia a Pure-Iron Helmet and 6 Pure-Iron Alloys:
    • "Thank you for the help, and sorry for the trouble. What lies ahead makes me uneasy, but I'll make it through to reunite with my squadron and finally return to my family, there is no better motivation than that. Farewell, stranger." (The player can choose "Farewell" or "Don't leave yet")

If the player clicks "Don't leave yet":

    • "Still something you need? Or do you not feel I'm ready?"

If the player clicks "Captive spirit?" (the player must have conversed with the Spirit Stranger about Calavia):

    • "Hm? Oh, so ye noticed. Yeah, I carry a bauble containing a spirit. I didn't elaborate on my job because it's none of ya business. Alas, clarification is in order so ye don't get any wrong ideas." (The "Captive spirit?" is replaced with "Explain")

If the player clicks "Explain" (this option is replaced with "Request Kyretha's Crux" after the cutscene with the Spirit Stranger):

    • "The spirit I carry is of the original wielder of the Blade of the Mountain, Kyretha, who was slain in an isolated range. She was part of a "unique" group who's souls were bound to another, and due to this I was tasked with retrieving her body and soul to send back to the Bastion of Arum - The barons deemed this of utmost priority. I recognise the taboo nature of ensnaring a spirit in glass, but I hope ye understand now."

    Cutscene with the Spirit Stranger:
    Stranger: "Oi!"
Stranger: "I wouldn't take that spirit back to Arum if I were ya."
Calavia: "And why would that be?"
Stranger: "Forgive my bluntness, but the barons of Arum are nothing but rancorous demons."
Calavia: "Excuse me? I haven't seen a single droplet of malice from them, and I've been workin' with them for years!"
Stranger: "As have I... in a more direct sense. Just trust me lassie, break free Kyretha's spirit. Let her truly rest."
Stranger: "To doubt the wisdom of a liberated spirit would be most imprudent."
Calavia: "... Gorhal'on. Taborti. I'll free it after I go through the portal."
    Stranger: "Is that a promise?"
    Calavia: "Bi'oruen."
    Stranger: "Very well."

If the player clicks "Request Kyretha's Crux" without an Empty Crux Card:

    • "Kyretha's spirit feels different now. I never realised the aura I felt was not of her power but of a strong negative emotion, it was foolish to assume the feeling was the norm for spirits of her splendour. I can comphrehend her emotions more clearer, and I do believe she's willing to give ye her crux, if ye have something to imbue."

If the player clicks "Request Kyretha's Crux" with an Empty Crux Card:

    • "Kyretha's spirit feels lighter - less shrouded in negative emotion. Alas, that means what the spirit spoke of is true, the barons hide a darkness I have turned a blind eye to. Ya know what? If I ever get back to Arum, I'll look into it, all stealth-like. But anywho, I do believe she'll be willing to give ye her crux, she offers it freely."
  • Notes

    • Calavia's melee attacks are affected by the Disarmed debuff, however their damage is reduced by 25% instead of 66.67%.

    Trivia

    • The BestiaryBestiary entry for the Calavia: "A Chief-Warrior of the Iron Realm, lost and troubled by her distant venture from her home of Khen Boldur, which was spurred on by the barons of Arum. Swordplay and smithing is her expertise, along with familiarity of Blizzard magic."
