Thorn, Bane of the Forest is a Pre-Hardmode boss recommended to be fought after King Slime.

While Thorn, Bane of the Forest is alive, the music Dramatic4 will play.

Spawn

Thorn can be spawned by using a Heart of Thorns at daytime, which can be found naturally growing on grass, usually near spawn.

Behavior

Thorn is a stationary boss, choosing an attack at random then either using another attack or teleporting. Standing in the boss's hitbox will inflict the Ensnared debuff instead of dealing contact damage.

Attacks

Thorn has 5 different attacks it alternates between, these include:

  • Brambles - Spawns Thorn Seed.pngThorn Seeds above the player that sprout into Thorn Trap.gifThorn Traps upon hitting a solid tile or a platform (below 50% health, spawns seeds faster).
  • Thorn Whip - Shoots out multiple Cursed Thorn.pngCursed Thorn tendrils in a row which sweep around the boss. Can be interrupted if the player moves far enough away (below 50% health, the tendrils get longer).
  • Poison Stingers - Shoots a spread of 4 evenly spaced stingers that inflict Poisoned, then a spread of 8 stingers, then a spread of 4 (below 50% health, shoots 4 spreads of stingers, the spreads containing 4, 8, 4, and 16 stingers respectively).
  • Life Draining Thorns - Shoots a burst of Life Draining Thorn.gifLife Draining Thorns that restore 20 of Thorn's health upon hitting a player (below 50% health, the burst is shot for longer).
  • Cleave - Thorn Thorn Slash.gifslashes at the player's position 4 times, indicated by a Thorn Flash.pngflash occuring right before the slash (below 50% health, slashes 5 times and in a quicker succession). The slashes inflict Bleeding.
  • Upon reaching 35% / 50% health, Thorn spawns a Mana Barrier.gifMana Barrier which spins around it, reflecting magic projectiles back at the player and absorbing non-magic ones.

Aftermath

Notes

  • Most of Thorn's projectiles can't travel through tiles, the exceptions are the Thorn Whip and Cleave.
  • Thorn's Brambles attack sprout on platforms level to the player and fall through higher ones.
  • If Thorn goes back above 50% health through its Life Draining Seeds, its attack will return to their original state, but the Mana Barrier will stay.

Trivia

  • The BestiaryBestiary entry for Thorn, Bane of the Forest: "An unfortunate warden of a cursed forest, doomed to be consumed by blighted thorns."
  • Upon defeating Thorn, the Chalice of Alignment will say: "The blight should quell with this unfortunate warden slain."
  • Thorn was originally created when Halm, the mod's creator, was trying to make an RPG game, and appeared as the first boss of the game.
  • During Christmas, Thorn's name will change to "Everthorn, Bane of the Holidays"
  • Thorn used to be a rematch boss in the Ancient Deity Duo fight.
