Thorn, Bane of the Forest is a Pre-Hardmode boss recommended to be fought after King Slime.
While Thorn, Bane of the Forest is alive, the music Every Rose... will play.
Spawn
Thorn can be spawned by using a Heart of Thorns at any time, which can be found naturally growing on grass, usually near spawn.
Behavior
Thorn is a stationary boss, choosing an attack at random then either using another attack or teleporting close to the player. Standing in the boss' hitbox will inflict the Ensnared debuff instead of dealing contact damage.
Phase 1
Thorn has 6 different attacks it alternates between, these include:
- Thorns - Slams its claw down and spawns a row of 15 destructible
Bramble Traps to its sides. Thorn will not perform this attack if there are more than 20 Bramble Traps active at the same time.
- Below 75% health, spawns 2 more Bramble Traps.
- Below 66% health, spawns 3 more Bramble Traps.
- Brambles - Slams its staff down and shoots 3
Splinter Balls that split into 8
Splinters in a circle.
- Below 75% health, shoots 5 Splinter Balls instead.
- Below 66% health, shoots 6 Splinter Balls instead.
- Life Drain - Fires a volley of
Life Draining Thorns that restore 20 of Thorn's health upon hitting a player.
- Only performs this attack while below 90% health.
- Below 66% health, shoots 2 volleys instead.
- Below 25% health, shoots 3 volleys instead.
- Cleave - Raises its claw and conjures a
Claw Slash at the player's position 4 times. The slashes inflict Bleeding.
- Below 85% health, performs 3 Claw Slashes instead.
- Below 66% health, performs 4 Claw Slashes again.
- The delay between slashes gets shorter below 85%, 66%, 65%, and 25% health.
- Arcane Bolts - Conjures 3
Arcane Bolts that move in 1 of 3 random patterns. They can either fly straight at the player, be launched in an arc at the player, or perform a spin and then fly in the general direction of the player.
- Below 66% health, conjures 6 Arcane Bolts instead.
- Below 66% health on the For the worthy seed, conjures 60 Arcane Bolts instead.
- Seed Rain - Launches a total of 8 gravity-affected
Thorn Seeds into the air that sprout into a cluster of
Cursed Thorns upon hitting a tile.
- Below 66% health, launches a total of 12 Thorn Seeds instead.
Phase 2
Upon reaching 66.67% health, a cutscene will start after Thorn finishes its previous attack. During the cutscene, Thorn will become invulnerable and cast a protective spell that changes its Fire elemental resistance to 0.75x and grants it immunity to On Fire!, Hellfire, Moonflare, Frostburn, Frostbite, Shadowflame, and Dragonblaze debuffs. The ground will be filled with fog and the sky will darken, similar to being in the Graveyard. Afterwards, Thorn will drop its hood and enter Phase 2, ending the cutscene and making it vulnerable again. Additionally, Thorn performs the following attack once:
- Claw Dance - Fades into the mist, becoming invulnerable. The player will then be surrounded by 6 Thorn Slashes in a circle that converge in the center, with an opening between them. This repeats 2 more times. Afterwards, Thorn will rapidly conjure Thorn Slashes at the player, forcing them to move horizontallly.
- Below 25% health, the circle will consist of 7 Thorn Slashes instead. Additionally, the rapid slashes will become faster.
- On the For the worthy seed, the circle will consist of 1 additional Thorn Slash.
Upon reaching 25% health, Thorn will slam both of its arms down and gain a glowing eye, as well as increasing its idle animation's speed. Additionally, some of its attacks will be enhanced further and it will perform the Claw Dance attack again.
Aftermath
- The Alignment will increase by 2.
- Nightshade and Anglonic Mystic Blossom will begin occasionally growing on grass.
- The Clothier will begin selling Thorn Plushie.
Notes
- If Thorn goes back above its health thresholds through its Life Draining Seeds, its attacks will return to their original states. However, it will still remain in Phase 2 and attacks having Phase 2 conditions will not change.
Trivia
- The
Bestiary entry for Thorn, Bane of the Forest: "An unfortunate warden of a cursed forest, doomed to be consumed by blighted thorns."
- Upon defeating Thorn, the Chalice of Alignment will say: "The blight should quell with this unfortunate warden slain."
- Thorn was originally created when Halm, the mod's creator, was trying to make an RPG game, and appeared as the first boss of the game.
- During Christmas, Thorn's name will change to "Everthorn, Bane of the Holidays"
- Thorn used to be a rematch boss in the Ancient Deity Duo fight.
