"I have finally found you, vermin... Prepare to reap what you sow..."
Skull Digger is a Pre-Hardmode Miniboss found in the Cavern layer after defeating The Keeper if the player has a Sorrowful Essence in their inventory, or spawns during the fight if the player has a Sorrowful Essence in their inventory. Attacks by teleporting close to the player and performing one of three attacks, two utilizing its flail.
While Skull Digger is alive, the music The Loudness of Silence will play.
Behavior
Attacks
- Flail Throw - Throws his flail at the player.
- Flail Spin - Flings his flail in a circle around him, creating projections of the head of his flail that fire at the player after a delayed period of time.
- Soul Charge - Charges up for a short period of time, releasing a burst of soul charges at the player.

Aftermath
- The player's Alignment will decrease by 1.
- The Chalice of Alignment will proclaim "A saddening conclusion to this protector and mistress, but perhaps there is another way..?"
NPC
After the player has freed The Keeper's spirit using the Abandoned Teddy, Skull Digger can be found around the Caverns as a friendly NPC. If you have the Wedding Ring, the option is given to give him the ring, freeing his spirit and raising Alignment by 1.

- "Oh... I thank you for freeing my mistress from her sorrow. But now without her, what is my purpose. I do not yet feel fulfilled. If only I could have a token of her, an object of remembrance..."
When the player clicks "Talk":
- "What would a meaningless protector offer in the ways of discussion..? Perhaps I may tell you about my past life... No, it's nothing but a blur now. Octavia resurrected me and kept my withering body moving for so long I have lost my old self. I'm barely an undead anymore, more so a spirit. But don't pity me, I enjoyed my time with her, it made me feel I had a purpose..."
When the player clicks "Give Wedding Ring":
- "What's this..? A ring..? Oh! Her spirit, her jolly spirit! It still remains infused within this ring. Why thank you, gracious soul, for this gift hath lifted my sorrowful shoulders. With this as a reminder, mayhaps I find peace too."

Skull Digger's Spirit
After the player has freed Skull Digger, you may sometimes find him in the Spirit Realm as a friendly NPC. You can talk to him or request his crux, giving you 
Crux Card: Skull Digger as long as you have an Empty Crux Card.

- "Hmmmm... Oh! I never expected for you to see me again, seeing as I am a full-fledged spirit now. Hm, I care not that our paths cross again so soon, as perhaps you may assist my worried thoughts."
When the player clicks "Talk":
- "You see, I was expecting to join my mistress in this realm, seeing as we were both freed of our sorrows. Contrariwise, I have no sight of her, none at all... I have looked and looked, but alas, I feel I am searching for a ghost - in the metaphorical and literal sense. If you know not of where she lies, I suppose I must continue my search. I must not let my vexation sway me, lest I turn vengeful."
When the player clicks "Request Crux":

Bestiary entry for Skull Digger: "The first successful reanimation from the Keeper. Skull Digger swore to protect and care for her, while she would use forbidden necromancy to keep his fading body alive. At this point, his lower half is nothing more than a spirit."
