"I have finally found you, vermin... Prepare to reap what you sow..."
The Skull Digger is a pre-Hardmode miniboss found rarely in the Cavern layer after defeating The Keeper. If the player has the Sorrowful Essence in their inventory, the chance of encountering the Skull Digger will drastically increase. Additionally, having Sorrowful Essence during the fight with The Keeper will summon the Skull Digger before the beginning of her second phase.
While Skull Digger is alive, the music The Loudness of Silence will play.
Behavior
The Skull Digger tries to stay either to the left or right of the player, periodically teleporting a short distance away. He will perform one of the attacks listed below at random. After teleporting, Skull digger will have a 2 / 1 second cooldown before he can perform his next attack.
Attacks
- Flail Throw - Spins his flail before throwing it directly at the player.
- Flail Spin - Spins his flail around himself, creating
Flail Mirages that launch at the player after a delay.
- Soul Charge - Charges up for a short time, releasing a burst of
Soul Charges at the player.
Quotes
If the player fights the Skull Digger underground:
- "I have finally found you, vermin..."
- "Prepare to reap what you sow..."
If the player fights the Skull Digger during The Keeper's fight:
- "Mistress Octavia, are you harmed?"
- "My lady, you need not worry, I shall crush this vermin."
- "Prepare to reap what you sow..."
On death:
- "My dear mistress, I have failed you."
- "It seems our torment stays eternal."
Aftermath
- The player's Alignment will decrease by 1.
- Skull Digger will no longer spawn in the Cavern layer if the player doesn't have the Sorrowful Essence in their inventory.
NPC
After the player has freed The Keeper's spirit using the Abandoned Teddy, Skull Digger can be randomly encountered in the Caverns layer as a friendly NPC. Having Sorrowful Essence will increase the chances of finding him. If the player has the Wedding Ring, they can give it to Skull Digger, freeing his spirit and raising Alignment by 1.
Quotes
- "Oh... I thank you for freeing my mistress from her sorrow. But now without her, what is my purpose. I do not yet feel fulfilled. If only I could have a token of her, an object of remembrance..."
When the player clicks "Talk":
- "What would a meaningless protector offer in the ways of discussion..? Perhaps I may tell you about my past life... No, it's nothing but a blur now. Octavia resurrected me and kept my withering body moving for so long I have lost my old self. I'm barely an undead anymore, more so a spirit. But don't pity me, I enjoyed my time with her, it made me feel I had a purpose..."
When the player clicks "Give Wedding Ring":
- "What's this..? A ring..? Oh! Her spirit, her jolly spirit! It still remains infused within this ring. Why thank you, gracious soul, for this gift hath lifted my sorrowful shoulders. With this as a reminder, mayhaps I find peace too."
- " What's this..? A ring..? And your attire... Is this a proposal? ..Oh! Her spirit, her jolly spirit! It still remains infused within this ring. Why thank you, gracious soul, for this gift hath lifted my sorrowful shoulders. With this as a reminder, mayhaps I find peace too." (If the player is wearing the Wedding set or Tuxedo set)
After being freeed:
- "Thank..."
- "You..."
Skull Digger's Spirit
After the player has freed the Skull Digger, they may sometimes find him anywhere as a friendly spirit NPC while the Spirit Walker ability is active. The player can talk to him or request his crux, Crux Card: Skull Digger, as long as they have an Empty Crux Card in their inventory.
Quotes
- "Hmmmm... Oh! I never expected for you to see me again, seeing as I am a full-fledged spirit now. Hm, I care not that our paths cross again so soon, as perhaps you may assist my worried thoughts."
When the player clicks "Talk":
- "You see, I was expecting to join my mistress in this realm, seeing as we were both freed of our sorrows. Contrariwise, I have no sight of her, none at all... I have looked and looked, but alas, I feel I am searching for a ghost - in the metaphorical and literal sense. If you know not of where she lies, I suppose I must continue my search. I must not let my vexation sway me, lest I turn vengeful."
When the player clicks "Request Crux":
- "For all the kindness you have brought, I will accept. May I serve you well."
- "Of course, but I cannot without an object to imbue." (If the player doesn't have an Empty Crux Card)
